<image:title>About - About</image:title>
<image:caption>Journalism/books: I have worked as a journalist and editor for numerous best-selling national magazines and publishers since the late 1990s. As a freelancer, I have contributed features for national titles including Stylist (cover feature), OK! Magazine and Soaplife. Freelance editor: I have recently assisted on non-fiction books by investigative journalists including Julie Bindel and Rose George, as well as popular ultrarunner Ira Rainey… among all sorts of others. Public speaker: I have appeared on numerous TV and radio shows including on BBC and ITV. I have also chaired Q&As and panels for organisations including Bristol Old Vic, Bristol Ideas, literature festivals and more; and have been a speaker at many events including the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Comedy: I founded the award-winning What The Frock! Comedy project in 2012 to challenge an industry that knowingly overlooks female talent, and wrote The What The Frock! Book of Funny Women. Education: My BA is in Media & Cultural Studies (2000) and I hold two MAs: one in Modern & Contemporary Literature (2008) and another in Cinema Studies (2009). I am a qualified magazine journalist (2001).</image:caption>

<image:title>The Women Who Built Bristol: Vol Two - The Women Who Built Bristol: Volume Two</image:title>
<image:caption>Behind every strong city, there is an even stronger army of women creating the bricks with which to build it. In volume two of The Women Who Built Bristol, we meet a further 250 inspiring females who fought tooth and nail to shape our city and the wider world. Olympians rub shoulders with boot makers; suffragists stand beside grocers; scientists are as one with artists. Includes one washed up whale, two plucky daredevils, 38 women called Mary and 1,955 donated eggs. And much, much more besides. Foreword by Thangam Debbonaire MP. Also contains 30 brand new illustrations. What people are saying about the book: “Jane Duffus has done a brilliant job of restoring these “forgotten” women to their rightful place in history. Important and colourful stories, passionately researched and beautifully told. I love this project.” Viv Groskop: journalist, broadcaster, comedian “Our ability to understand the present day is hampered when the circumstances of women of the past remains unrecorded. In her second volume, Jane Duffus continues to redress this imbalance by illuminating women whose legacy, whether for good or bad, helped form Bristol. I await volume three!” Lord-Lieutenant Peaches Golding OBE: feminist, entrepreneur</image:caption>

<image:title>The What The Frock! Book of Funny Women - The What the Frock! Book of Funny Women (2015)</image:title>
<image:caption>The What The Frock! Book of Funny Women will neither ask nor answer the question ‘Are women funny?’ because of course women are funny. To suggest otherwise is plain silly. This book presumes you know women are funny and simply seeks to confirm this fact and celebrate some of the wonderful women who have made us laugh for the past century or more. Since launching in 2012, What The Frock! Comedy has gone from being a one-off show to a regular event that has expanded to several UK cities. Ultimately, it's about providing a platform to champion upcoming female comedy talent – so that when you ask someone to name their favourite funny woman, the answer isn't always a pause followed by, "Err, there is only Sarah Millican isn't there?" With chapters delving into the rich and varied history of women in comedy, and more than 70 biographies of some of the funniest women over the past century (including almost 30 guest writers), The What The Frock! Book of Funny Women is the perfect book for comedy lovers.</image:caption>

<image:title>Yeovil Cinemas Through Time - Yeovil Cinemas Through Time (2013)</image:title>
<image:caption>With digital TV, DVDs, Blu-ray players and internet downloads, there have never been more ways to watch your favourite movies. But not so long ago the only option for film fans was a visit to the local cinema. The first picture house in Yeovil was the Princes Street Assembly Rooms, which was built in 1889 as a general entertainment venue and started screening films in 1896. Jane Duffus takes us on a unique journey through time to see the affect that modern technology has had on the many cinemas that Yeovil once had, and in doing so reveals a rich vein of untapped history about the town. This full colour book will surprise and delight anyone who knows the area.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Containing 250 inspiring women, three sheroic dogs and one heartbroken barmaid from Easton. The Women Who Built Bristol is a bursting compendium of brilliant women who helped to shape Bristol into the vibrant city it is today. From pin makers to police chiefs, from workhouse inmates to lord mayors, this book shows that Bristol was built by women. Also contains 30 brand new illustrations. What people are saying about the book: “Jane Duffus and fellow contributors of The Women Who Built Bristol introduce us to a glorious and eclectic set of women who are linked to Bristol. This a wonderful reminder of the texture of women’s lives and their influence in every sphere – something historical accounts often forget. A great initiative from Bristol Women’s Voice, I hope other cities also follow suit.” Helen Pankhurst - granddaughter of Sylvia and great-granddaughter of Emmeline Pankhurst “In this fascinating and eminently readable book, Jane Duffus gives us a real taste of the amazing women that built Bristol and links it superbly to women's achievements and women’s oppression worldwide.” Julie Bindel - journalist, author, broadcaster</image:caption>

<image:title>Elegantly Understated - Elegantly Understated: 175 Years of the Fears Watch Company</image:title>
<image:caption>This beautifully bound hardback book, published to coincide with Fears’ 175th anniversary, charts the history of the company from its founding in Bristol in 1846 by Edwin Fear, through to its closure in the late 1970s, and its subsequent re-founding in 2016 by one of Edwin’s 6th generation descendants, Nicholas Bowman-Scargill. It is a detailed history not only of Britain's oldest watch company, but also of a family business that persevered through numerous world catastrophes such as two world wars and the great depression. The book has a chapter devoted to each of the four managing directors who have been at the helm of the company over the years and contains numerous full colour photographs and illustrations from the Fears archive, of both watches and artifacts, along with maps of the former locations and the logos used by the company in each era. The foreword has been written by Roger Smith OBE, who is widely regarded to be one of the finest watchmakers in the world, hand-crafting watches of exquisite beauty and complexity.</image:caption>

<image:title>These Things Happen: The Sarah Records Story - These Things Happen: The Sarah Records Story</image:title>
<image:caption>Sarah Records was a label that signed the acts no major label would touch but who you wanted to hear. Sarah put out a board game, produced cut'n'paste fanzines and stuck two fingers up to the mainstream music industry. Sarah was your secret world and it was located in the heart of Bristol. Sarah Records lasted for seven years, nine months and 11 days. In These Things Happen, those who were there at the beating heart of the indie-pop world reveal the deepest, darkest secrets of what really went into making Sarah’s pop masterpieces. Featuring almost 130 interviews, including at least one member of every single band (as well as the world exclusive first interview with Christine of Christine’s Cat fame), this book is an oral history of a defining moment in pop history. Who stripped naked on stage to another band’s drum solo? Why did Julian Knowles sleep with his boots on his stomach in Hull? Whatever happened to Mr James C Urchin? All of these burning questions and more will be answered in this book. With no tatty old gig flyer left unturned in the pursuit of exposing the true political pop pandemonium that went on in the wonderful world of Sarah Records. “Hugely evocative of the Sarah Records scene and its political and cultural context. It’s also great fun!” Amelia Fletcher - Talulah Gosh, Heavenly “To my great regret, I never recorded for Sarah Records. Having read Jane's book, I feel as though I have. Immersive, imperial and impassioned.” Stephen Duffy - The Lilac Time “There were millions of labels who you'd get a record from and go, 'I don't know what this is going to sound like because this label means nothing to me’. Whereas with a Sarah record, you only had to look at it to have an opinion of it, rightly or wrongly.” David Quantick - former NME writer Book portrait photo by Andreas Hagman.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Who said there are not many women in Bristol’s history? Not me, that’s for sure! Following on from the 500 women already profiled in Volumes One and Two of this popular series, ANOTHER 250 extraordinary (yet, often, ordinary) women will be featured in Volume Three: due out in March 2025, in time for International Women’s Day. The women profiled include: the two girls thrown over the Clifton Suspension Bridge by their desperate father (spoiler alert: they survived); the prominent portrait photographer with strong suffrage ideals; the women who lived in a cemetery for more than 100 years; the greengrocer who sold the very first bananas in Bristol… and a woman who quite literally built (bits of) Bristol by virtue of owning a building company. Plus 243 others.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Women Who Won The Vote - The Women Who Won The Vote</image:title>
<image:caption>It is a scandal that the Tollemache women are not better known in the wider suffrage story. Linked to national militancy, arrested and imprisoned several times, these four sheroes led the way for the wider emancipation of all women. And their story didn’t stop with votes for women. These extraordinary ladies were also advocates for vegetarianism, animal welfare, market gardening, the arts, the political left, the Vedanta Movement for peace, and they opened one of the UK’s first Youth Hostels. It is finally time to reveal the glorious true story of the Tollemache women in this 62-page suffragette bookette, with a beautiful, specially-commissioned cover by Tina Altwegg. The Women Who Won The Vote is the first in an occasional series of bookettes taking a closer look at women who have a particularly extraordinary untold untold story. PS: Because the cover is so fabulous, Tina and I have made this available as a greetings card (without the text, obviously). Visit my shop to snap up your card/s.
